More about Sufism

The Alchemy of the Heart: Going Deeper

If Universal Sufism is the “Religion of the Heart,” then the practice of Sufism is the “Science of the Heart.” It is not a path of acquiring unusual powers; rather, it is a process of unfolding, a steady removal of the veils that hide our true nature from ourselves.

The Three Stages of Awakening

As Hazrat Inayat Khan taught, the soul’s evolution unfolds through three essential movements:

  • Knowledge: The ultimate realization where the “knower” and the “known” become one.
  • Belief: The initial spark of trust and the intellectual recognition of a Higher Reality.
  • Love: The quickening of the heart, where belief transforms into a living, burning connection.

Riding on the horse of hope, Holding in my hand the rein of courage, Clad in the armour of patience, And the helmet of endurance on my head, I started on my journey to the land of love… — Hazrat Inayat Khan

The Streams of Concentration

In the Ruhaniat, our work flows through several dedicated “Rays.” These are the practical applications of our spiritual science, ensuring that the message of Love, Harmony, and Beauty touches every aspect of human experience:

  • The Esoteric School: The inner sanctum of study, meditation, and the refined development of the soul.
  • The Dervish Healing Order: Focused on the healing power of the breath, light, and divine vibration to restore balance.
  • The Dances of Universal Peace & Walking Meditations: Founded by Murshid Samuel Lewis, these use sacred movement, chant, and rhythmic walking to move meditation from the mat into the body.
  • Spiritual Psychology (SoulWork): A process of “Inner Communion” developed by Pir Moineddin Jablonski. It integrates the various parts of our personality—our inner child, masculine, feminine, and shadow—into a “Sacred Marriage” of the heart.
  • Ziraat (Sacred Ecology): A “green spirituality” that uses the symbols of agriculture to honor our interdependence with the Earth.
  • The Service of Universal Peace: A celebratory interfaith practice that honors the one light within the world’s many religious traditions.

The Tools of Transformation

To support this inner alchemy, we utilize specific “spiritual technologies” that move the Message from the head to the very cells of the body.

The Pulse of Remembrance: Zikr and Fikr

  • Zikr (Vocal Remembrance): Through the rhythmic repetition of a sacred phrase, we harmonize our internal vibration and clear the heart of “other than God.”
  • Fikr (Silent Remembrance): The wordless awareness carried on the breath. It ensures that no breath is drawn without a conscious connection to the Infinite.

the Divine Names

We use the 99 Beautiful Names (Attributes) as vibrational keys. By chanting a specific Wazifa, such as Ya Wadud(the most intimate manifestation of Love) or Ya Raqib (the protective watchfulness), we “tune” our own character to resonate with the frequencies of the Divine.

Breath, Prayer, and Meditation

The Science of the Heart is underpinned by a disciplined yet gentle practice of Breath and Meditation. By mastering the breath, we learn to direct the life force (Prana) to heal and awaken. Through Prayer, we align our individual will with the Divine, creating a bridge between the finite and the infinite.

The Seeker’s Journey

The path of the seeker is an inward voyage through the “land of love.” It requires patience, courage, and a deep sincerity to navigate the distractions of the world.

The Stations of Presence

In our tradition, we speak of the journey as a deepening of presence through three primary “stations”:

  • Fana (The Great Unlearning): The softening of the limited ego (nafs). Like a drop of water meeting the ocean, we let go of our rigid definitions of “self.”
  • Baqa (Abiding Presence): Returning to the world while remaining anchored in the Divine. The drop does not disappear; it realizes it is the ocean in form.
  • Akhlak Allah (The Manners of God): When divine attributes like mercy and compassion begin to flow naturally through our unique personality.

The Silsila: A Chain of Light

Deep Sufism is a Living Transmission—an unbroken chain of light passing from heart to heart through the centuries.

When a seeker enters the path through Initiation (Bayat), they are connecting to a spiritual “current.” This connection provides the “voltage” and protection necessary to navigate the fires of transformation. From the hour of initiation, the seeker is linked to all “knowers of truth,” becoming a brother or sister to every human being without distinction of race, nation, or creed.

Toward Spiritual Liberty

Ultimately, the goal of this training is Self-Realization. This leads to Spiritual Liberty: the freedom from the dictates of the ego, allowing us to become clear channels for Love, Harmony, and Beauty to flow into the world.

“The Sufi sees the truth in every form. If one says, ‘This is the only way,’ the Sufi says, ‘This is also a way.’”— Hazrat Inayat Khan
